Vanessa Sloane has more than 27 years of Federal Government experience in the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and currently serves as Executive Assistant to the National Taxpayer Advocate (NTA) in the Taxpayer Advocate Service (TAS), an independent organization within the IRS. Ms. Sloane previously served as Deputy Director of the Low Income Taxpayer Clinic Program, where she oversaw and administered the $12 million federal grants program that provides yearly matching grants to organizations that represent and educate low-income and English as a Second Language (ESL) taxpayers.
Throughout her federal career, she held several leadership positions in which she successfully delivered key organizational objectives and high-profile programs. As Director of Business Assessment, Ms. Sloane led TAS-wide employee and customer satisfaction programs and organizational performance measures. She procured vendors and engaged staff across TAS to successfully develop and implement a new customer satisfaction survey and new case quality measures for TAS casework. As Program Manager for the NTA’s Annual Report to Congress, she led a diverse team of employees in developing the report, which identifies the most serious problems facing taxpayers and recommends administrative and legislative changes to improve IRS policies, products, and services.
Ms. Sloane began her IRS career as a Revenue Officer before joining TAS, where she also worked on developing TAS-wide training, guidance, and policies, and served as the Delaware Local Taxpayer Advocate for taxpayers with unresolved federal tax problems. Ms. Sloane is a strong advocate for quality customer service and employee development. She participated on IRS and TAS teams and in employee training initiatives to improve taxpayers’ experience. She also taught numerous leadership development courses, led TAS’s Senior Manager Readiness (SMRP) Program, supported TAS’s Frontline Leader Readiness Program (FLRP) and Mentoring Program, co-led TAS’s coaching initiative, and delivered numerous other technical and leadership training.
Ms. Sloane is a graduate of the IRS and TAS’s frontline leader, senior manager, and executive readiness programs. She has a bachelor’s degree in English and education and a minor degree in psychology from Ithaca College. As a White House Fellow and Equity member in OMBs Office of Performance and Personnel Management, she looks forward to helping federal agencies advance and sustain their equity work. She lives in Arlington, VA, with her husband, Gerard; two spoiled cats, Clarisse and Amelia; and her new rescue puppy, Pony.
