Diana Rutberg

Diana Rutberg has been the Chief Grants Management Officer for the National Institutes of Dental and Craniofacial Research since 2013. In this role, Ms. Rutberg oversees the business operations for a diverse portfolio of 1,000 research grants totaling more than $400 million. Ms. Rutberg’s branch ensures grant awards are processed accurately, timely, and within the National Institute of Health (NIH) and Department of Health and Human Services (HHS) policies. Additionally, her team provides expert guidance and policy interpretation to grantees and internal NIH staff on all grant-related issues that are of an administrative and financial nature.
Ms. Rutberg currently serves on many trans-NIH committees, including the Office of the Director COMMON Fund High-Risk High Reward, the Office of Director Biomedical Workgroup, and NIH’s Advisory Committee to the Director Working Group on Diversity. In addition to her role as Chief Grants Officer, Ms. Rutberg holds a warrant as an Other Transaction Agreement Officer. In this role, Ms. Rutberg oversees the following two high-priority programs: 1) RADx-UP Return to School, a Covid-related initiative focused on testing in underrepresented communities, and 2) AIM-AHEAD, an artificial intelligence (AI) and machine learning (ML) initiative for electronic health record for underrepresented communities. These programs have 17 awards totalling $90 million.
Prior to joining HHS and NIH in 2002, Ms. Rutberg worked for five years in the private sector at Marriott International Corporate Headquarters administering a $3.5 million Department of Labor Welfare-to-Work program. Ms. Rutberg is looking forward to her new role as a Fellow with the Made in America Office. She intends to leverage her vast experience in setting up new offices and building the innovative infrastructure necessary to achieve maximum results for the Federal Government. Ms. Rutberg received a master’s degree in business administration from the University of Maryland in 2003 and currently resides in Potomac, MD, with her husband, two children, and one dog. She has a black belt in Tae Kwon Do and has run five marathons, but is happily taking a hiatus from both.
