Dr. McDonald is a Medical Officer at the National Institutes of Health (NIH). She currently serves as the Director of the Gene Therapy Resource Program at the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute, and she oversees biomedical research programs spanning the translational spectrum from basic science to clinical trials in cardiovascular diseases and gene therapy applications.
Dr. McDonald has wide-ranging experience in healthcare, biomedical research, and drug development. Prior to joining the NIH, Cheryl worked in many different settings including, as a physician in private medical practice, as a Medical Officer at the Food and Drug Administration, as a Regional Medical Director for a major pharmaceutical company, and as a Registered Pharmacist in several retail pharmacies.
Cheryl has a degree in Pharmacy from Purdue University, a Medical Doctor degree from Indiana University, and completed a clinical Fellowship at The Ohio State University. She is Board Certified in Internal Medicine and Infectious Diseases and maintains active medical licensure in Ohio, Virginia, and North Carolina.
