Dr. Andrew Garrett, MD, MPH, is the Director of the National Disaster Medical System (NDMS) at the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services (HHS). NDMS is located in the Office of the Assistant Secretary for Preparedness and Response (ASPR) in its Office of Emergency Management (OEM). Prior to this position, Dr. Garrett was a Deputy Chief Medical Officer for NDMS for two years, and served as the Interim Director of the Emergency Care Coordination Center (ECCC).
Dr. Garrett is board certified in Pediatrics and Emergency Medical Services and has a clinical background in pediatric emergency medicine and pediatric transport medicine. He has broad field experience as a medical director for fire, EMS, and law enforcement agencies, and completed a fellowship in EMS and Disaster Medicine at the University of Massachusetts (2005). He completed a residency in Pediatrics at the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia (2001) after graduating from Dartmouth Medical School (1998). He currently has an adjunct appointment at the Uniformed Services University of Health Sciences as an Assistant Professor of Preventative Medicine and Biometrics. Prior to HHS, Dr. Garrett was in a senior leadership position at Columbia University’s Mailman School of Public Health at their National Center for Disaster Preparedness. Disaster response field experience includes Superstorm Sandy in 2012, the Joplin Tornado in 2011, the 2010 Haiti earthquake, and the Deepwater Horizon oil spill.
