Filing a housing discrimination complaint

Website

HUD provides a complaint process through the Office of Fair Housing and Equal Opportunity (FHEO) that allows the public to seek relief for alleged discrimination in housing. This complaint process is ensured by the Fair Housing Act, and is crucial for individuals who believe they have experienced discrimination in renting or buying a home, obtaining a mortgage, or engaging in other real estate transactions. The complaint process involves filing a complaint, understanding jurisdiction, and receiving investigative services from FHEO. This service has a significant impact on individuals facing discrimination, ensuring their rights are upheld and enforcing civil rights authorities related to housing. FHEO received over 32,000 inquiries related to housing discrimination and handled more than 4,000 housing discrimination complaints in 2022.
